Prenatal Genetic Counseling

When issues arise in a pregnancy, it’s important to be able to sit down and talk with an expert who can answer questions and provide comfort.

At Perinatal Associates of New Mexico, we offer genetic counseling from a board-certified genetic counselor and/or a board-certified clinical geneticist-physician that will help you understand the risk for birth defects or genetic disorders in your current pregnancy and will discuss the best steps for you and your family.

We want our patients to make informed decisions that reflect their own personal and cultural beliefs, values, and goals.

Women with the following risk factors may be candidates for genetic counseling:

  • Over the age of 35
  • Family history of birth defects or genetic disorders
  • Exposure to medications, drugs or chemicals
  • Abnormal AFP results
  • Multiple miscarriages
  • Diabetes

If further action is needed after counseling, our team of specialists offers testing such as ultrasounds and amniocentesis to determine if the current pregnancy may be affected.

I was referred to Perinatal Associates due to Advanced Maternal Age so my first initial appointment was pretty lengthy having met with a Genetic Counselor and then the ultrasound and consult w/ a doctor to follow. I learned things I wasn’t even aware of and may seem scary to some people, but I found that the information given was very helpful for future planning. The Providers and staff were very knowledgeable, kind, understanding and caring! I’m grateful that I didn’t have any real complications other than my age, but if I did I am confident that Perinatal Associates would have held my hand and yours should you need it through any uncertainties, time of need and/ or difficulties. The entire staff is amazing from the Front office all the way up to the Providers.
